Golpe do boleto falso / adulterado

  • Nao imprima boletos; use o PDF e mantenha o antivirus atualizado (protege contra o bolware).

So schützt du dich

Fake / altered boleto scam

Crooks circulate boletos (Brazil's bank slips) whose barcode and beneficiary data have been swapped for the fraudster's, often via malware called 'bolware'; the victim pays a bill that looks legitimate and the money goes to the criminal. The boleto is a typically Brazilian payment instrument, and its printable barcode/digit-line format is exactly what 'bolware' exploits to redirect ordinary payments.

How the scam works

  1. Malware ('bolware') on the victim's device, or a phishing email/message, delivers a boleto with the beneficiary's account silently swapped.
  2. The barcode is altered so scanning fails, pushing the victim to type the digit line by hand.
  3. The victim pays believing they're settling a real bill (rent, condo fee, an invoice).
  4. The money lands in the fraudster's account, instead of going to the real creditor.

Warning signs

  • A boleto whose barcode won't read, forcing you to type the digit line by hand.
  • The beneficiary's name/CNPJ on the payment screen doesn't match who you owe.
  • Boletos arriving by email/WhatsApp for bills you weren't expecting, or with changed amounts/due dates.

How to protect yourself

  • Always check the beneficiary name, CPF/CNPJ and amount shown on the payment confirmation screen.
  • Don't print boletos; use the PDF and keep your antivirus updated (it guards against bolware).
  • Check that the first three digits of the barcode match the issuing bank's code.
  • Register for DDA (Authorized Direct Debit) to receive electronic boletos straight from the source.
