So schützt du dich

Ich will mich schützenThe 'fake relative / I changed my number' scam
A stranger texts you from a new number claiming to be your child, grandchild or someone close with a 'new number', invents an urgent bill and asks for a quick Pix. It mostly targets older people, and in Brazil it works because WhatsApp is the family channel and Pix lands instantly, with no going back.
How the scam works
- You get a WhatsApp or SMS from an unknown number: 'Hi mom/dad, I changed my number' or 'my phone broke, this is my new number'.
- The crook often uses the relative's real photo (grabbed from social media) as the profile picture, to look genuine.
- Once he has your trust, the 'relative' says there's an urgent payment: a bill, a locked account, a purchase he can't complete.
- You're pressured to send a Pix right away to a third party's account, before checking with the real family member.
Warning signs
- A 'relative' who only texts, from a brand-new number, and dodges any voice or video call.
- An urgent money request that must be paid now and kept secret.
- The name of the Pix recipient doesn't match the relative's name.
- A slightly off writing style, or details the real person would know that this contact avoids.
How to protect yourself
- Always call the relative's old/known number to confirm before sending anything.
- Ask a question only the real person could answer.
- Never pay a Pix to a third party 'on behalf of' a relative without voice confirmation.
- Teach older family members this exact routine and agree on a family safe-word.
