  2. Ele ganha a confianca rapido e leva a conversa pra um chat privado.
  5. O pagamento costuma so aumentar as exigencias, nao encerrar a ameaca.

So schützt du dich

Financial Sextortion of Teens

Offenders pose as attractive young people to trick minors, mostly boys, into sending intimate photos. Then they threaten to publish everything unless the victim pays. This has exploded because organized crews abroad run it at industrial scale, and AI now fabricates fake images even of victims who never sent anything.

How the scam works

  1. The offender creates a fake profile of an attractive young person on a social network or gaming platform.
  2. They build trust fast and move the chat to a private channel.
  3. They send (or claim to send) an intimate image and pressure the minor to reciprocate.
  4. Once they have a photo, they reveal it was blackmail and demand money via gift cards, payment apps, wire transfer or crypto.
  5. Paying usually just escalates the demands rather than ending the threat.

Warning signs

  • A new online 'friend' who quickly turns the chat sexual and asks for photos.
  • A stranger who moves fast from a public app to private messages.
  • Any threat to 'send your photos to your family/followers' unless you pay.
  • Requests for payment in gift cards or cryptocurrency.

20+ suicidios
Suicides linked to these sextortion cases from Oct 2021 to Mar 2023
The FBI has repeatedly warned that financially motivated sextortion is a 'rapidly escalating threat', with offenders operating largely from West African countries and parts of Southeast Asia, targeting boys aged roughly 14 to 17.

How to protect yourself

  • Talk to teens early: anyone can be tricked, and it is never the victim's fault.
  • If targeted, stop paying and stop responding immediately; paying only fuels more demands.
  • Save the messages and usernames and report to the platform and law enforcement (in the U.S., the FBI and NCMEC).
  • Set accounts to private and be wary of new contacts who ask for photos right away.
