Golpe do 'Oi mãe / número novo' no WhatsApp

So schützt du dich

'Hi Mum / new number' WhatsApp scam

A message arrives from an unknown number claiming to be your son or daughter writing from a new phone. Then they invent an urgent bill they can't pay because the 'old' banking app is gone. It's the digital successor to the old Swiss 'Enkeltrick', runs in German, French and Italian and often asks for payment to a Swiss-looking IBAN so it doesn't raise suspicion.

How the scam works

  1. A WhatsApp or SMS arrives: 'Hi Mum, my phone broke, this is my new number.'
  2. After a bit of small talk to win your trust, the 'child' says there's an urgent bill to pay today.
  3. They claim they can't pay it themselves because e-banking was on the broken or lost phone.
  4. They send a new bank account (often foreign) and ask you to transfer the money straight away.
  5. After the payment, contact often stops or a second 'emergency' appears.

Warning signs

  • A 'family member' contacting you from an unknown number and dodging a call or video call.
  • Urgency plus an excuse for why they personally can't pay ('app not working', 'locked out').
  • A request to transfer to an account whose name clearly isn't your relative's.
  • Slightly odd phrasing or a generic greeting ('Hi Mum') instead of your name.
SRF's consumer programme Kassensturz/Espresso documented Swiss parents receiving fake 'Hallo Mama' WhatsApp messages and being pressed to transfer money for fictitious invoices.
Cantonal Police Zurich (Kapo Zuerich) publicly warned of this scam as a modern digital version of the classic 'Enkeltrick' (grandchild trick).

How to protect yourself

  • Call the person on their old, known number to confirm before doing anything.
  • Agree a family code word for real emergencies.
  • Never transfer money just because of a message from a new number.
  • Report it to the NCSC/BACS, then block and delete the number.
