'Hallo Mama / Hallo Papa': der Verwandten-Betrug auf WhatsApp

Ein Betrueger schreibt Dir und gibt sich als Dein Kind oder Verwandter von einer 'neuen Nummer' aus, weil das Handy weg sei, erfindet eine dringende Rechnung, die er nicht zahlen kann, und bittet Dich um eine Ueberweisung. 'Hi Mum / Hi Dad' Family Impersonation on WhatsApp

A scammer messages you pretending to be your child or relative from a 'new number' because they lost their phone, then invents an urgent bill they can't pay and asks you to transfer money. Now it's spreading from WhatsApp to SMS and adding AI voice notes that clone the relative's real voice, making 'it's really me' far more convincing.

How the scam works

  1. You get a WhatsApp or SMS from an unknown number starting with 'Hi Mum' or 'Hi Dad'.
  2. The sender claims they lost or broke their phone and are messaging from a temporary number.
  3. They describe an urgent problem, a bill or payment they can't make because they're locked out of their bank.
  4. They ask you to make the payment for them now, promising to pay you back.
  5. The money goes to the scammer's account and the 'relative' disappears.

Warning signs

  • A message from an unknown number claiming to be a relative with a new phone.
  • An urgent request to pay a bill or transfer money fast.
  • The sender avoids a voice or video call to 'prove' who they are.
  • Small inconsistencies in tone, or reluctance to answer something personal only the real relative would know.
GBP 1,5 mi
UK losses from WhatsApp relative-impersonation reports between 3 Feb and 21 Jun 2022 (1,235 reports)

How to protect yourself

  • Call the relative on their known, usual number to confirm before doing anything.
  • Ask a question only the real person could answer, and be wary if they dodge a voice or video call.
  • Never rush a payment just because someone is pressuring you; scammers thrive on urgency.
  • Report suspicious messages to your country's fraud body and to WhatsApp.
