In Brasilien hinterliessen allein rund 23 solcher Systeme in fuenf Jahren etwa R$ 40 Milliarden Verlust.

Warnsignale

  • Versprechen fester, hoher Gewinne 'ohne Risiko'.

So schützt du dich

Fake crypto investments and financial pyramids

Schemes promising fixed, spectacular daily or monthly returns from 'crypto trading', which are really pyramid/Ponzi frauds: they pay old investors with new investors' money. In Brazil, at least 23 such schemes left about R$40 billion in losses over five years. Heavy interest in crypto, aggressive influencer marketing and little experience with regulated investing made the country home to some of the world's largest crypto pyramids.

How the scam works

  1. A professional-looking company or influencer advertises 'guaranteed' returns (like 1% to 3% per day) from crypto 'robots' or expert trading.
  2. The first participants receive payouts and post proof, fueling word of mouth and recruitment on social media.
  3. The returns don't come from real trading but from new deposits, and everyone is pushed to recruit more people.
  4. When the new money slows, withdrawals freeze and the operators vanish with the funds.

Warning signs

  • Promises of fixed, high returns 'with no risk'. That's impossible in real investing.
  • Pressure to recruit friends and family and earn bonuses for it.
  • The company isn't authorized by the CVM/Central Bank and pushes you to deposit fast.

Combined losses from at least 23 alleged crypto pyramid schemes in Brazil over five years
Unick Forex - one of the largest crypto pyramids in Brazil, collapsed in 2019 with roughly R$12 billion in losses and around 1 million victims.
GAS Consultoria (Glaidson Acacio dos Santos, the 'pharaoh of bitcoins') - about R$9.3 billion in losses and 127,000 victims.

How to protect yourself

  • Before investing, check whether the company is registered/authorized with the CVM.
  • Treat any 'guaranteed' or fixed daily return as a red flag for a Ponzi scheme.
  • Be even more suspicious of opportunities promoted by influencers or in WhatsApp/Telegram groups.
  • Never invest money you can't afford to lose in unregulated 'crypto funds'.
