Quishing: o golpe do QR code falso

So schützt du dich

QR Code Phishing (Quishing)

Scammers stick on or send malicious QR codes that lead to fake sites to steal your logins and card details or trigger recurring charges. It's growing because QR codes became a habit after the pandemic and, since you can't read a code with your eyes, they're the perfect hiding place for a malicious link, even inside emails that slip past spam filters.

How the scam works

  1. Scammers stick fake QR-code labels over the real ones on parking meters, restaurant tables or public posters.
  2. Or they send unexpected parcels and letters, or emails, with a QR code inside.
  3. Scanning the code opens a fake site closely resembling a real company's.
  4. The victim enters payment or login details, or approves a 'small' charge that becomes a recurring subscription.
  5. The credentials and money go straight to the scammers.

Warning signs

  • A QR code that looks like a sticker layered over another code or sign.
  • A code arriving with an unexpected parcel, letter or email telling you to scan it.
  • The scanned link goes to a shortened or misspelled domain rather than the official site.
  • The page immediately asks for login or full card details.
The FBI and FTC issued public warnings about QR-code scams, including the FTC's alert about unexpected parcels arriving with a QR code that, when scanned, leads to a phishing site that steals personal and payment data.

How to protect yourself

  • Before paying, check the address the QR code opened and confirm it's the official domain.
  • In public, feel for a sticker over the real code and prefer typing the official site or using the official app.
  • Never scan a QR code that arrived with an unexpected parcel or unsolicited message.
  • Use a card or payment method with good fraud protection and watch for surprise recurring charges.
