Golpe do amor (romance scam)

So schützt du dich

Romance scam ('golpe do amor')

A fake online suitor, almost always posing as a wealthy foreign professional, builds an intense romance over weeks and then invents emergencies or a 'package held by customs/the Federal Revenue' to squeeze ever-larger payments from the victim. The classic Brazilian twist is exactly the 'package held by the Receita Federal', a believable story used to justify the first fee, almost always collected by Pix.

How the scam works

  1. The crook creates an attractive fake profile (often a foreigner: soldier, doctor, engineer) and starts chatting on social media or a dating app.
  2. He uses 'love bombing' - fast, intense declarations of love - to build emotional dependence, always avoiding video or an in-person meeting.
  3. A crisis appears: a medical emergency, a business problem, or a 'gift/package' supposedly held by the Federal Revenue that needs a fee to release.
  4. The victim sends money once, then is asked for more in growing amounts, until the money runs out or she realises it's a fraud.

Warning signs

  • A fast 'I love you', with no video call at all and endless excuses to never meet.
  • A partner you've never seen in person who, later on, asks for money.
  • Stories of held packages, customs/Federal Revenue fees or sudden emergencies that require transfers.
  • Profile photos that, in a reverse image search, show up on other people.
Operation 'Philia Ficta' by the Federal District Civil Police (PCDF) targeted a romance-fraud ring whose scheme caused losses estimated at over R$500,000 across victims in several regions.

How to protect yourself

  • Never send money to someone you only met over the internet.
  • Insist on a live video call right at the start; a refusal is a huge red flag.
  • Run a reverse image search on the profile photos.
  • Talk to a trusted friend or family member before making any financial decision.
