Golpe do amor (fraude romântica)

So schützt du dich

💔 Romance scam

Romance scam (love fraud)

The scammer builds a fake online relationship that lasts months or even years. Then they invent emergencies or investment 'opportunities' to draw ever larger sums from you. In Switzerland the authorities have already run public 'RomCon'-style campaigns, and more and more these cases blend romance scam with crypto investment fraud, aimed at the victims of a relatively wealthy country.

How the scam works

  1. Contact starts on a dating site or social network, with an attractive, attentive profile.
  2. The relationship heats up fast, but the person always avoids meeting in person or making a video call.
  3. A crisis appears: a medical emergency, blocked funds, travel costs or customs fees to 'come visit you'.
  4. You send money, often repeatedly, sometimes over years.
  5. More and more the scam turns into a fake crypto/investment 'opportunity' the 'partner' recommends.

Warning signs

  • Declarations of love very early, but constant excuses to never meet or video-call.
  • Requests for money for emergencies, travel or 'investments'.
  • Inconsistencies in the story; profile photos that turn up elsewhere on the internet.
  • Being asked to keep the relationship or the payments secret.
661 offences
Romance-scam offences registered in Swiss police crime statistics in 2023 (likely a large under-count due to under-reporting)
A 39-year-old Fribourg resident transferred over CHF 600,000 to a romance scammer over about eight years.
Ten people were arrested in a Switzerland-based operation over international romance-scam and money-laundering offences, with losses running into the millions.

How to protect yourself

  • Never send money or crypto to someone you haven't met in person.
  • Do a reverse image search of the person's photos and question the inconsistencies.
  • Talk early to a friend or relative you trust; scammers rely on isolation and shame.
  • Report it to the police and the NCSC/BACS.
