So schützt du dich

When the person spying on you sleeps beside you: stalkerware

There are spy apps sold as a way to "keep an eye on" someone: they hide on the phone and send your messages, photos and location to another person. Often it was a partner, an ex or someone close who installed it while holding your device. In 2023, almost 31,000 people had one of these apps detected on their phone. You deserve a space of your own, and you can get it back.

How the scam works

  1. It almost always needs physical access: someone takes your unlocked phone for a few minutes and installs the app in secret.
  2. Once installed, it disappears from the home screen: no icon, or it disguises itself with an innocent name like "System" or "Wi-Fi".
  3. It runs in the background and copies messages, calls, photos and your location, sending it all to whoever installed it.
  4. Often the person who installed it already knew your PIN or unlock pattern, because they are close to you.

Warning signs

  • The battery drains much faster and the phone gets warm even when idle.
  • Your mobile data use went up for no clear reason.
  • The person seems to know things you only said in messages, or only where you have been.
  • An app you do not recognise shows up, or your antivirus flags a threat.

How to protect yourself

  • Before you touch the device, if you suspect someone dangerous is near you: reach out for support. The Coalition Against Stalkerware (stopstalkerware.org) brings together help organisations; if there is violence or a threat, you are not alone and there are people ready to support you.
  • Run a good antivirus / anti-stalkerware: they detect most of these apps. Several Coalition partners offer a free version.
  • Change your unlock code to one only you know, and turn on two-step verification on your accounts.
  • Careful: deleting the app right away can alert whoever is spying. If there is a risk of violence, first build a safety plan with support; a factory reset is the last step and wipes everything.
