So schützt du dich

WhatsApp account takeover via the SMS verification code

Someone tries to get you to read back the 6-digit code that just arrived by SMS. If you hand it over, the crook steals your WhatsApp and starts asking your contacts for money as if it were you. It was the single most-reported bank-client scam in Brazil in 2024, and it explodes there because nearly everyone uses WhatsApp and pays instantly by Pix.

How the scam works

  1. The crook finds your number and name (in marketplace ads, leaks or social media).
  2. He starts registering your number on his own phone, which makes WhatsApp send the 6-digit code to your SMS.
  3. Posing as a company, a delivery or 'WhatsApp support', he messages you with an excuse to ask for the code that 'just arrived'.
  4. You read out the code, he activates your account on his device, and you get locked out.
  5. With your account, he messages your contacts inventing urgency and asking for a Pix.

Warning signs

  • Anyone asking you to read back a code that came by SMS. No real company ever needs it.
  • Being logged out of WhatsApp suddenly or asked to 're-verify' your number.
  • A known contact asking for money by Pix, in a hurry and with a new reason.

How to protect yourself

  • Turn on two-step verification (the PIN) in WhatsApp settings, so a stolen SMS code alone isn't enough.
  • Never share the SMS code with anyone, for any reason.
  • Before paying, confirm the request by calling the contact on a number you already know, or by video.
  • If your account is stolen, re-register your number right away (the code kicks the crook out) and warn your contacts.
